Chile's former president dies in helicopter crash

Sebastian Pinera, a millionaire businessman who twice served as the head of state of Chile, passed away in a helicopter accident, according to a statement from his office.

The announcement on Tuesday stated, "It is with deep regret that we announce the death of the former president of the Republic of Chile," and it went on to say that Pinera,74, passed away in the well-known vacation area Lago Ranco, some 920 kilometers (570 miles) south of Santiago.

During his first term as president from 2010 to 2014, Pinera—a successful businessman as well—oversaw rapid economic development and a substantial decline in unemployment at a time when many of Chile's neighbors and trading partners were experiencing noticeably slower growth.

During his second term as president, which ran from 2018 to 2022, there were violent demonstrations against inequality that sparked claims of human rights abuses and resulted in the administration announcing plans to design a new constitution.

The official disaster agency for Chile, SENAPRAD, verified that one person had died and three others were injured. Who was on board was not immediately identified by the administration.
